Hope in the Mud

Today I find hope in the mud. Literally. The waters of the Chao Phraya are roiling; the silty, muddy water churning  around, as the river comes to the city, after flooding extensive areas along its plains.

The rains have fed the river into a swollen, frenzied mass, and the river has been offloading a little to the left and a little to the right, as it has struggled to keep to its well-defined course.

Sitting by the river bank and reflecting on this, I am suddenly transported two decades back in time. I have a dear niece, who was three-or-four-years old then. Her mother would give her a full glass of chocolate milk and ask her to finish it. The little girl would be overwhelmed by the size of the glass and by intuitive extension, the volume of chocolate milk inside it. So, she devised a beautiful solution to this problem of plenty. She would tilt her glass a little to the left and a little to the right. Whatever few drops splashed on to the table top meant that much less to drink up.

The Chao Phraya, maybe through the Wisdom that is shared and imprinted on all things, living or inanimate,  since the beginning of Time, gained this little girl's insight into how to escape Mother Nature's intention of  force feeding it all that rain water that has fallen from the skies in the last two months. It overflowed a little on its left bank and a little on its right bank.......all that chocolate-coloured muddy water!

So as I sit by the riverside, with another iced latte, I watch as all manners of boats bob up and down in the churning waters, struggling to keep upright. Cruise boats, barge trailers, city transport boats. Tourists queue up for daytime cruises, though evening cruises are more enchanting and hence, more popular. They hold hands, walk around, take selfies, while they wait for their rides to line up at the dock. So many smiling faces, so much of positive energy all around, so much of hope - of making a safe cruise on a swollen river - and an iced latte! What else do you need on a grey, overcast day?!

Btw, for those of you who wondered what happened to my very smart and intuitive niece, well, she is a top shot consultant at a Big Three firm, what else!!
